St Begnet's Church Dalkey

St Begnet's church is situated in the village of Dalkey beside Goats castle, a tower house now home to the Dalkey heritage centre. The church dates from the 10th century and may have replaced an earlier wooden church on the same site. The church consists of a nave and chancel with entrance to both the nave and the chancel on the south wall. Much of what survives of the structure is Anglo-Norman in origin. The presence of an entrance in the west gable is a feature of early medieval stones churches. Unlike the other two doorways into the church which are arched this doorway has a stone lintel. The nave may have been enlarged in the 13th century. One unusual feature of the church is its twin belfry. In the cemetery a Tau Cross made of red sandstone survives.

The church on Dalkey island, also an early stone church is also known as St Begnet's church.
